WHERE

Plymouth

What it’s like

Waterside dockyard turned food and activity spot, with free history and geology trails, paddleboarding, sea swimming and a cinema.

This is a former naval dockyard you can wander for free, with two self-guided trails to give you a reason to walk further than the nearest café. The Geo Trail covers 380 million years of geological history and the History Trail takes you through two centuries of Royal Naval heritage, both interactive and both free, which makes them the obvious first stop before you decide where to eat.

Older kids and teenagers get more out of the physical side: climbing the staircase up to the South West Coast Path, paddleboarding tuition with South West SUP, or sea-swimming sessions with ACE Swimming if you fancy something colder than a paddling pool. There's also an Everyman Cinema on site if the weather turns, and you can charter a sailing boat or catch the ferry over to the Barbican or Saltash, which turns a wander round some old buildings into a proper half-day out.

Food is not going to be the problem here. Between Wagamama, Bistrot Pierre, Wildwood, Seco Lounge, a tapas bar, a microbrewery and a couple of coffee spots, you could visit three times and eat somewhere different each time. Parking is pay and display on site, and if you'd rather not drive at all there are frequent buses, a ferry service and a scenic 30-minute walk in from the city centre.

It's free to get in and look around, which is the main draw for a family trying to fill a day without spending much beyond lunch and a coffee. The paddleboarding and sea-swimming sessions will cost extra and need booking with those specific operators, so treat the trails and the architecture as the free bit and the water activities as the treat you add on if the kids are keen.

Frequent local buses. Local ferry services from the marina to the Barbican and Saltash
  • The Geo Trail and History Trail are both free and need no booking, so they're the easy default activity.
  • Paddleboarding and sea swimming are run by outside operators (South West SUP and ACE Swimming), not the Yard itself.
  • BLOCK Cafe has free Wi-Fi if you need to sit and work while the kids explore.
  • There's a seasonal Shack café too, so options change a bit depending on the time of year.
  • The ferry from the marina is a nice way to link a visit here with the Barbican.

Plan your visit

Is it free to visit?

Yes, getting in and walking round is free, including both the Geo Trail and the History Trail. You'll only spend money on food, parking or activities like paddleboarding.

Is there parking on site?

There's pay and display parking on site. If you'd rather skip it there are frequent local buses and a scenic 30-minute walk in from the city centre.

What is there for younger kids to do if they're not into paddleboarding?

The two trails are the easiest option, since they're free, interactive and don't need any booking or kit. The staircase up to the South West Coast Path is also just there to explore.

Can we book paddleboarding or sea swimming on the day?

Paddleboarding tuition runs through South West SUP and sea-swimming sessions through ACE Swimming, so you'd book with them directly rather than turning up on spec.

What if it rains?

There's an Everyman Cinema on site, plus enough restaurants and cafés, including Wagamama, Bistrot Pierre and a tapas bar, to fill an afternoon indoors.

How do we get there without driving?

Frequent local buses run to the Yard, there's a ferry from the marina to the Barbican and Saltash, and Plymouth's mainline rail station connects further afield.
