WHERE

Plymouth

What it’s like

The mainline station itself, with step-free platforms, a 24-hour car park and trains running most of the day.

This is the train station rather than a heritage line or a boat trip, so the appeal here is practical: it's where you actually get on a train to go and do something else. The ticket office opens early and stays open into the evening most days, which suits an early family trip or a late one back, and the car park is free and open around the clock so you're not clock watching if plans overrun.

Step-free access runs to all platforms via lifts, and wheelchairs are available on site if you need one, which makes it a straightforward starting point if you've got a buggy or anyone who struggles with stairs. There's an accessible toilet and baby change too, so a nappy stop or a quick regroup before boarding isn't a problem.

If you're heading somewhere on a longer-distance train, there's food and drink available on board, and it's all cashless, so a tap of a card covers snacks for the journey. Bike parking is on site as well, and you can reserve a bike space or a seat when you book your ticket, which is worth doing if you know you'll want somewhere specific to sit with kids in tow.

It's not an attraction to linger at once you've arrived, more the sensible, well-equipped way to start or end a day out elsewhere by rail.
