What it’s like
A half-hour scenic ferry hop across to Cawsand's beach, rock pools and village lanes.
The trip itself is the fun bit. It's a half-hour crossing over to Cawsand and Kingsand, and kids get a proper boat ride out of it rather than just a means of getting somewhere. Once you're off, there's a beach to poke about on and rock pools and inlets to explore, which is where you'll lose an hour or two without really trying.
It's £6.50 for an adult and £3.50 for a child aged 3 to 15, so a family crossing won't break the bank. Under-3s go free, and if you've brought the dog along, it sails for free too as long as it's well behaved. Bringing bikes costs a bit extra at £3 each, worth remembering if you fancied cycling round once you land.
You don't need to book ahead, you can just turn up and buy on the day. That's handy, but it also means your ticket doesn't guarantee a specific crossing time, so build in some slack if you've got somewhere to be. Tickets are non-refundable too, so it's not one to buy on a whim if the weather looks dodgy.
There's a café and toilets at the terminal, and the ferry runs daily, 9am to 5pm in summer and 9am to 4pm over winter. One thing to flag is that the ferry itself isn't wheelchair accessible, though the crew will help less able-bodied passengers as best they can. Younger children will manage the crossing fine at three and up, and the disco nights around Halloween and Christmas give it a different kind of visit if you fancy something after dark.
