What it’s like
Miniature steam trains chuff through a woodland nature reserve, with tunnels and bridges along the way, for £1.30 a ride.
This one's only open on the first and third Sunday of the month, April to October, and only for two and a half hours in the afternoon, so it takes a bit of planning. But the trains themselves are the point: proper little steam engines running through a nature reserve, with tunnels, bridges and woodland to look at as you rattle along. At £1.30 a ride it's the sort of price where you just say yes rather than doing the maths.
There's no minimum age listed. Older kids who are into trains properly will get more out of it, spotting the different locomotives, but the appeal here is pretty simple and it doesn't need much explaining to a two-year-old either.
Parking is on-site but limited and first-come, first-served, so turning up early in the window is the sensible move rather than rocking up at half three hoping for the best. There's a café and toilets on site, plus baby change, though toilet accessibility is limited. One genuine faff: card readers aren't currently working.8m height clearance on the overbridge to the clubhouse if you've got anyone tall in tow.
If it's a birthday on the cards, parties can be arranged on running days, but you'll need to book ahead through their contact form and then go in person to sort the details, which is more steps than most places ask for.
