Model Villages & Miniature Railways in Plymouth

If your kids like things done in miniature, Plymouth's got a good one close to home. Plymouth Miniature Steam runs its trains through a woodland nature reserve, tunnels and bridges included, and it's just £1.30 a ride, so a few goes round won't break the bank. For something further out, there's a longer trip out to Looe for Polperro Model Village, a shrunk-down version of the real fishing village with Cornish myths woven into the walk round. For a proper railway ride rather than a village to wander, it's a longer trip out to Buckfastleigh for the South Devon Miniature Railway, a half-mile track that's diesel-hauled most weekends and steam-hauled on gala days (bring a card, it's card only). Toddlers will be happy with the steam trains and the tunnels near Plymouth; older kids who like an occasional gala day might prefer the trip to Buckfastleigh. There's parking, a cafe and baby change on site at the Plymouth one, so it's the easiest choice with a buggy in tow.
