Largs
What it’s like
A free sandy beach with a boating lake close by, open round the clock for a wander, a paddle or a sandcastle session.
There's no gate and no ticket, just sand, sea and a boating lake within reach if the tide's not playing ball. It's the sort of beach where you can turn up with a bucket and spade and let the afternoon sort itself out, whether that's building something ambitious or just walking the length of it and back.
Being open all day and every day is handy if you're the sort of family that ends up there at odd hours, though it also means there's nobody to ask if the tide's in or the wind's picked up, so use your own judgement on the day. There's a café on site for when the sandcastle building gets hungry work, and toilets nearby, which covers the basics without anyone having to promise the earth.
It's free, which for a beach is exactly as it should be, and that makes it an easy one to add to a day that's already got a plan, or to build a whole afternoon around if the weather's behaving. The boating lake next door is the extra bit worth saving for after the beach itself has lost its shine, a change of scene rather than a big finale.
