What it’s like

A tiny original Cold War monitoring post where veterans talk you through how a nuclear strike would have been tracked.

This is a Royal Observer Corps underground post, and it's built for three people at a time, so this isn't a wander-round-yourself sort of visit. A guide who actually served in the Corps takes you through the original kit, showing how they'd have plotted a nuclear blast from underground using the instruments that were actually there for the job.

It's free to get in, which is unusual for something this specific, and it only opens weekend afternoons between April and September, 1pm to 5pm. Given the size of the place, pre-booking is essential rather than a nice-to-have, so don't turn up on spec expecting to be squeezed in.

The appeal here is the history being told first-hand rather than off a laminated sign, and that's the bit worth building the visit around. It won't take long once you're in, given the scale of the space, but the story the veterans tell is the whole point of going.
