Caves, Mines & Underground in Glasgow
Underground days out around Glasgow tend to be small and specific rather than big cave systems. The Govan Stones Museum is free to get into and sits right in Govan, with early medieval carved stones inside a church and guided tours if you time your visit right. A longer trip out to Skelmorlie takes you to a tiny original Cold War monitoring post, where veterans explain how a nuclear strike would have been tracked, all free but you need to book ahead. Further out still, Dunfermline has St Margarets Cave, a guided walk down to where legend says Margaret once prayed. For a quick, free visit close to the centre, Govan is hard to beat, just check the guided tour times. The bunker at Skelmorlie needs booking in advance, so sort that before you set off, and it is indoors throughout if the weather turns. St Margarets Cave runs on fixed slots across the summer and has parking and a cafe on site, useful if you are making a day of the drive to Dunfermline.
