What it’s like

A woodland glen estate near Largs with a secret forest, a playbarn and animal fields to explore.

The glen is the main event here. Kids get a trail booklet for the Great Kelburn Quest and go off hunting clues through the Secret Forest, past the graffiti castle and along the Neverending Glen art walk. There's an outdoor play area with a wild western saloon if they want a run at something more conventional, and an indoor playbarn for when the Scottish weather does what it usually does.

Grounds entry runs on a suggested donation, so you're not being stung at the gate, but parking is £7 a car and the Playbarn and Secret Forest are charged on top. The quest booklet is £6, which feels like a fair swap for an hour of them actually reading a map instead of asking to go home.

Animal Fields are worth building the visit around, and there are wildlife walks if you fancy stretching it out. This is proper woodland glen terrain though, with steep paths, narrow bits and steps, so a pram is more hindrance than help. Staff will store it for you at the entrance, which is a decent compromise, but it's not a place for a wheelchair or a buggy-and-toddler combo without a plan.

Food-wise there's a café doing cakes, cold drinks and warm meals, though hot food stops an hour before closing so don't leave lunch too late. The castle itself is still lived in by the Earl of Glasgow's family. Dogs are welcome on a lead, which is handy if the walk's as much for you as the kids.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Grounds, the glen and gardens run on a suggested donation of £2. Parking is £7 a car, and the Playbarn and Secret Forest are charged separately on top.

Do we need to book?

There's nothing in what they list about needing to book ahead, so it looks like a turn-up sort of place.

Is it OK for a pram or buggy?

Some of the glen paths aren't suitable for prams because of the terrain. Staff will store your pram for you at the entrance if you want to walk it without one.

What about wheelchairs?

The paths get steep and narrow in places, so it's not suitable for wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

Can we go inside the castle?

Not usually, it's still the Earl of Glasgow's family home. It opens for tours in the summer months and for certain occasions.

Is there food on site?

The café does cakes, cold drinks, ice lollies and warm meals. Hot food stops an hour before the café closes, so aim for an earlier lunch.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, on a lead at all times, partly because there are free roaming chickens, pheasants and cats about the place.

What is the Secret Forest?

It's one of the play areas on the estate, open from 11am, though it closes for winter from late September.

How long does a visit take?

Between the Secret Forest, the playbarn, the animal fields and the quest trail, you could easily fill a half day.

Is the whole estate open all year?

The Secret Forest shuts for winter from 22 September and the Neverending Glen only runs until September. The whole estate also closes mid-June to mid-July for the Kelburn Garden Party Festival.

Is there a toy shop or gift shop?

There's a toy shop open 11am to 4pm alongside the gift shop.
