WHERE

West Kilbride

What it’s like

A small-group guided tour round a genuinely old tower house, with the walled garden thrown in.

This isn't a wander-round-yourself sort of castle. You book a guided tour, up to 8 people at a time, and someone takes you through the building itself and out into the walled garden grounds. Because the group's capped so small, it feels more like a private look round than a heritage attraction with coach parties.

The tours only run March to the end of September, so it's not a wet Tuesday in February option. Adults are £25, which isn't pocket change for an afternoon, but kids 10 and under go free. Book as a group of adults or over-11s and it drops to £22.50 a head.

Getting there is the bit to plan properly. There are only 7 parking spaces and you have to book one alongside your visit, not just turn up and hope. There are no buses out to Hunterston either; the nearest station is West Kilbride, and from there it's a 3 mile walk unless you book a taxi ahead. Worth sorting the whole day out in advance rather than as an afterthought.

It's a proper old building. Wheelchair access is limited through the castle itself, though the tarmac driveway gets you to the grounds and they say access there can be arranged if you contact them before booking. Cancel within 7 days of your visit and you won't get a refund.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£25 for an adult, and free for children 10 and under. Book as a group of over-11s or adults and it's £22.50 each.

Do we need to book ahead?

Yes, both the tour and a parking space have to be booked in advance, they don't just let you turn up.

When can we visit?

Guided tours run from 1 March to 30 September. Outside that, they mention special arrangements for Clan members visiting from abroad, but that's about it.

Is there parking?

Only 7 spaces on site, and you need to book one when you book your visit rather than assuming there'll be room.

How do we get there without a car?

West Kilbride station has regular trains from Glasgow, but it's a 3 mile walk from there to the castle. There are no buses, so a pre-booked taxi is your other option.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Access through the historic building itself is limited. A tarmac driveway does reach the castle and grounds, and they say grounds access can be arranged if you contact them before booking.

What if we need to cancel?

Cancel 7 or more days before your visit and you get a full refund. Any later than that and there's no refund.
