Milsey Bay Beach

What it’s like

A quiet stretch of sand with rock pools to poke about in, paddling, and even the odd toy boat set sailing.

This is the spot for rock pooling rather than the main town beach everyone piles onto. There's a proper rock pool for paddling and, from what they list, sailing small boats in, which is the sort of thing that'll keep a five-year-old busy for a good half hour while you sit on a towel and pretend you're not also enjoying it. Beyond that it's swimming and exploring the pools for crabs and whatever else has washed in.

It's free to get in, obviously, being a beach, and there's free parking along Melbourne Road and Tandallon Terrace including disabled spaces, so you're not hunting for change before you've even got your shoes off. If you're coming by train, North Berwick station is under a kilometre away with hourly services from Edinburgh, which makes this an easy one without a car.

Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round. The one thing to know: the toilets are only open in summer, so plan your timings if you're going in winter or you'll be relying on a nearby café instead.
