What it’s like

Free entry to a historic hall with model railways, old bicycles and family walks around the grounds.

There's no charge to get in, which makes this an easy one to try on a whim. Kids can wander the hall itself, and on open days there's a model railway display and a collection of historic bicycles that'll catch the eye of anyone who's into anything with wheels. Guided walks and family activities run alongside, so it's not just a look-round-and-leave sort of visit.

Under-threes get in free to events and tours, and anyone 12 or under needs an adult with them inside the hall itself. That's not a huge ask, but worth knowing if you were planning to let an older child range off on their own while you sit with a coffee. Refreshments are only on sale during open days and events, so a casual midweek visit might mean bringing your own snacks just in case.

One genuine faff right now: the main gates on Yew Tree Road are cordoned off because of damaged gate piers. The grounds are also less kind to buggies and wheelchairs when it's wet, with some paths getting properly boggy, so this one's better suited to a dry day if you can manage it.

Dogs are welcome as long as they're under control and kept in sight, though they're not allowed into the marked children's play areas. Good footwear is recommended for the park and gardens, which tells you the terrain isn't all flat paths and tarmac.
