What it’s like
A miniature railway ride through a garden centre, with a maze, quarry gardens and wetlands walk to explore afterwards.
The main event is the train itself, a proper miniature railway that trundles through Russells Garden Centre. There's a gift shop for anyone who takes their railway enthusiasm seriously, and once you're off the train the garden centre opens up into a hedge maze, the Secret Quarry Gardens and a wetlands walk, so the ride is really just the start of the visit rather than the whole of it.
It's worth knowing this isn't a daily runner. The trains only operate on specific days, so you'd want to check which ones before you plan the trip around it. It's open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and Sunday 10am to 3pm, plus Bank Holiday Mondays, but that's the garden centre's hours, not necessarily the railway's.
Being open-air, it's a fair-weather attraction really. The site itself says wet days make it hard to get about comfortably, and the garden centre paths are gravel and stone, so wellies or sturdy shoes earn their keep here. The trains need a bit of mobility to ride safely too, though the first-class Maroon Midlander carriages are pitched as the comfier option if that's a concern.
Food-wise there's the Potting Shed Cafe on site, though the kitchen shuts an hour before the garden centre does, so don't leave lunch until the last minute. There's an accessible toilet next to the café as well.

Plan your visit
Is the railway running every day?
No, it only operates on specific running days, so it's not a guaranteed daily thing. Best to check which days before you set off.
What are the opening hours?
Monday to Saturday it's 10am to 4pm, Sunday 10am to 3pm, and it's open Bank Holiday Mondays too on the same hours as weekdays.
Is it suitable if it's raining?
Not really the day for it. It's an open-air attraction and the site itself flags that wet weather makes getting around harder, plus the paths are gravel and stone.
Can you get food there?
The Potting Shed Cafe is on site at the garden centre. The kitchen closes an hour before the garden centre itself does, so don't leave it too late.
Is it accessible for wheelchairs or limited mobility?
There's an accessible toilet by the café, but riding the train itself needs a degree of mobility. The first-class Maroon Midlander carriages are the more comfortable option if that matters to you.
