Birmingham & Midland Institute

Birmingham
What it’s like
A quiet members' library and lecture venue in the city centre, worth knowing about if you want to introduce a curious child to a proper old reading room.
This isn't a soft play or a hands-on museum, it's a working library and lecture institute on Margaret Street, and that's exactly the appeal if you've got a child who likes books, quiet rooms and the odd talk. Membership gets you into the Members' Room and the library itself, plus discounted entry to whatever lectures are on, which is worth knowing if your kids are the sort who'll sit through a talk on local history without fidgeting too much.
The building's open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm, so there's a decent window for a visit that doesn't have to be squeezed into a school-holiday afternoon. The café only runs 10am to 3pm though, so if you're planning lunch there, get there before mid-afternoon or you'll be hunting for food elsewhere in town.
Getting there without a car is the easier option. New Street and Snow Hill stations are both under ten minutes on foot, which beats the parking situation, there's no car park on site and you're relying on metered spaces on Cornwall Street or a nearby car park, which is a bit of a faff with a buggy or tired legs in tow. Disabled parking bays are on Cornwall Street too, near the Newhall Street junction, though it's worth saying wheelchair access inside the building is limited and staff assistance is needed.
There's nothing here that shouts family attraction, and that's rather the point. It suits an older child with a genuine interest in books or history more than a toddler who needs something to climb on.
