Baggeridge Country Park
WHERE
Dudley
What it’s like
A big country park where kids can hit the sandpit and diggers, ride a miniature railway, or try the high ropes if they're brave enough.
The play area is the obvious first stop, with a sandpit, digger, swings and slides for younger ones to get stuck into. Older kids will want the miniature railway or the mountain bike trail, which the site says suits mixed abilities, so you're not stuck with one child bored while another has all the fun. The walking trails come either self-led or with an instructor, which is handy if you fancy someone else doing the navigating for once.
For anyone past the age where a swing counts as thrilling, there's the Challenge Academy high ropes course, which feels like the thing to save for last once everyone's legs are warmed up. Fishing and camping are both on offer too, so this isn't a quick hour's visit if you want to make a day of it.
Parking is pay and display or through the app, £2 an hour or £3.50 for the whole day, and blue badge holders get in free. If you're local enough to visit often, the six-month and annual permits work out a lot cheaper than paying each time. The tearoom stays open all year for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, and with 18 flavours of dairy ice cream on the list, that's likely to be the deciding argument for staying past lunchtime.
It's open daily from 9am to 7pm, closed only on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
