Art for Life Sutton Coldfield
WHERE
Sutton Coldfield
What it’s like
Adults-only drawing and painting classes, from a ten-week course in composition and portraiture to one-off printmaking and pastel workshops.
This one's for the grown-ups, not the kids. It's a studio set-up built around adult art classes, so leave the pushchair at home and go for yourself instead.
The main course runs for ten weeks and covers composition, tonal value, colour harmony and portraiture, and it's pitched at all abilities, so you don't need to have picked up a pencil since school. Alongside that there are shorter workshops dipping into printmaking, watercolours, pastels, acrylics and mixed media, which is a decent way to try a technique before committing to the longer course. There are also wellbeing days built into the programme, which suggests this is as much about slowing down for a few hours as it is about technique.
Come the summer, students and tutors put their work up in an exhibition, which is a nice reason to go back even if you never pick up a brush yourself. There's food on site, which matters more than it sounds once you're three hours into a Saturday workshop and flagging.
