Science & Discovery Centres in Birmingham
Right in the city centre, Thinktank has over 200 hands-on exhibits, a 4K planetarium and MiniBrum for the smaller ones, all for £9.95 and up. There's parking and a cafe on site, so you don't need to plan the whole day around finding lunch. It's the obvious choice if you want science without a long drive. If you fancy making a day of it, Conkers out in Moira is a longer trip but it's a different kind of visit altogether: rope trails, a splash park, a barefoot walk and an indoor play house for when the rain won't hold off. It's from £7.25, needs booking ahead and takes cards only, so sort that before you set off. Thinktank suits a shorter visit with under-5s in tow, while Conkers rewards a full day outdoors.
