What it’s like

A big woodland day out with rope trails, a splash park, a barefoot walk and an indoor play house for the rainy bits.

This is a proper stretch-your-legs day rather than a quick stop. Kids climb through the Enchanted Forest zone with its rope walkways, take on the Fairy Labyrinth woodland challenge, and there's a multi-stage activity trail for the five-plus crowd who want more of a test. Younger ones get the Conkachoo train rides and the Barefoot Walk, where you go sock-footed over different textures, which sounds like a small thing but tends to be the bit they talk about after.

There's also a splash park with a pirate ship for warm days, and if the weather turns there's Billy Bonkers indoor play house, a 4D cinema and an Interactive Hall to fall back on, so a grey sky doesn't write off the visit. The site itself reckons on three hours or more, and says a lot of families end up coming back for a second visit rather than trying to do it all in one go, which tells you it's a fair size to get round.

Admission shifts with the season. Off-peak it's £9 for an adult or a child aged 3 to 15 on the standard rate, £10 if you add Gift Aid, rising to £11.25 or £12.50 in high season. A family ticket for two adults and two children runs from £36 up to £48 depending on the time of year, and under-3s get in free. Worth knowing that Paint A Pot pottery, High Ropes and Outdoor Pursuits sit outside that admission price as extras, so budget on top if your kids fancy them.

Parking's free at both the Discovery Centre and the Waterside Centre, and there's full disabled access indoors including the toilets and restaurants, plus mobility buggy hire if you book ahead. Picnics are allowed and the site says there are plenty of spots to have one. Just bear in mind they want sensible footwear and covered toes for the activities and play equipment, so flip-flops aren't going to cut it on the trails.
