Lakes, Reservoirs & Riversides in Plymouth
Water and walking near Plymouth mostly means a drive out to Dartmoor's edge. Burrator Discovery Centre at Yelverton is the easy pick: free to visit, with paths round the reservoir for tor climbing or a slower wander, a discovery centre to duck into, and parking, toilets and a picnic area if you're making a day of it. It's dog friendly too, so no need to leave the dog behind. For something further out, there's Kennick Reservoir near Teignbridge, a longer trip from the centre. It's a quieter countryside walk rather than a swim or paddle stop these days, since the reservoir's now restricted to anglers and the western bank's closed for soft mud, so go for the views and the walk, not the water. Burrator's the one to choose with younger kids or a pushchair, being flatter and better equipped; Kennick suits an older group happy with a longer, plainer walk.
