Xcite Craigswood

What it’s like

Soft play, swimming lessons and kids' fitness classes under one roof, with birthday parties on the side.

The soft play room, Space Bugs, is the bit that'll wear the small ones out, and at £6.70 a session it sits in the same price bracket as most of what's on offer here. Alongside that there's learn to swim, kids coaching, and Fitness Factory classes for children, so it's less a one-trick venue and more somewhere you could fill a whole wet Saturday if you had to.

Swimming's the one to plan around a bit. Under-fives get in for £3.50, under-18s are £4.50, and adults pay £6.60, which is fair enough if you're both getting in the water rather than one of you standing at the side with a coffee. The gym session at £8.70 is clearly built for the grown-ups rather than the kids, so don't book that thinking it's a family activity.

Hours are generous through the week, open from half six in the morning right up to 10pm Monday to Friday, which suits anyone trying to fit a swim in before work or after tea. Saturday's the tighter day, 9 till 5, so if you're planning a weekend visit go earlier rather than later. Sunday opens at 9 and runs through to 8pm, giving you more room to breathe.

There's free parking and wifi, which covers the basics without anyone pretending it's a spa day. Birthday parties are on the list too, so if the soft play room's a hit you can come back and book the room out properly.
