What it’s like

Fossil hunting on free geological trails where you might spot the Dudley Bug on a guided walk.

This is a fossil hunt, not a soft play with a roof. The trails wind through old quarry workings and there's a proper guided walk called Hunt the Dudley Bug, which is worth timing your visit around if the idea of finding a genuine trilobite fossil gets your kids moving faster than usual. Beyond that there's wildlife to spot, butterflies included, and a few viewpoints that make the geology make sense rather than just look like a big rocky hole.

It's free, it's outdoors, and it's open all the time, so there's no ticket to book and no session to rush. That also means there's nobody there to help if things go wrong. There's no visitor centre, no toilets and no food on site, so sort snacks and a loo stop before you arrive, not after.

The accessible route to the Fossil Trench and Ripple Beds is suitable for all wheelchairs, and the Highlights Walk works for mobility scooters and wheelchairs with a bit of support. Parking is free on Wrens Hill Road with one blue badge space, and a pushchair should manage the main paths fine. One faff worth knowing: if you need step-free access outside car park opening hours, you will need a RADAR key to get through.

Give it a couple of hours if you want to do the guided walk and actually hunt for fossils rather than just wander through. It suits a family who like being outside and doesn't mind coming home a bit muddy with a pocket full of rocks.
