What it’s like
Former-miner surface tours plus the Into the Dark coalface simulation - no real underground, but a proper Leicestershire pit day out.
Follow a former miner round the surviving Snibston buildings - lamp room, control room, powder magazine, pit top and winding house - then step into Into the Dark, a surface coalface recreation that stands in for the real underground (you cannot go down the shaft here).
Tours run on set dates through 2026, usually about 1.5 hours at 11:00 and 13:30, starting and finishing at the colliery cafe. Adults £8; under-15s free (just turn up with them). Book adult tickets on Eventbrite. Sensible shoes help - there are steps onto the pit top and winding house, and Into the Dark is not wheelchair accessible.
The site sits inside free-to-enter Snibston Colliery Park in Coalville (LE67 3LN), with playground, trails, toilets and Grounds Cafe on the same park. Park behind the cafe (ANPR, pay on exit).
