What it’s like

Free country park with flat trails, a cycle route and a hilltop sculpture with sea and city views, open all year round.

This one's about getting outside without spending anything. The trails are level and well-surfaced on the main tracks, so a buggy or a wheelchair copes fine, and there's a car park right at the entrance by High Weetslade Farm if you'd rather not walk in from the bridleways on the west side.

Kids can potter along the nature trails looking for damselflies and dragonflies around the reed beds, or you can put them on bikes for a stretch of the Sustrans Reivers Coast to Coast route. The hilltop sculpture is the bit to aim for if you've got the legs for it, with views out to the North Sea, the Cheviots and across to Newcastle, and it's a proper "we got there" moment for a school-age child.

If you fancy going off the main tracks, be warned some of the eastern slopes are eroded and can get wet, and there are steeper, boggier bits away from the level paths. There are grazing animals about too, so dogs need to stay on the lead. It's free entry and open all year, so there's no session to plan around, just pick a dry-ish day and go.

There's a picnic area if you want to bring your own food, since there's nothing said about anything on site. It suits a slow amble with a toddler just as easily as a longer cycle with an older child who wants a proper destination to ride to.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Nothing, entry is free.

Do we need to book?

No booking, just turn up whenever suits.

Is it OK for a pushchair or wheelchair?

The main tracks are level and well-surfaced, so both cope fine. Just stick to those main paths rather than the eastern slopes, which can be eroded and wet.

Is there parking?

A car park at the main entrance near High Weetslade Farm.

Can we bring the dog?

Dogs are welcome but keep them on a lead, there are grazing animals around.

What's there to actually do?

Walking and nature trails, a stretch of the Sustrans Reivers Coast to Coast cycle route, and a hilltop sculpture with views over to the sea and Newcastle. Good for spotting dragonflies and birds around the reed beds too.
