What it’s like
Free stainless steel models of waterwheels and flood defences to poke at, plus a wildlife sound wall, on the edge of the river.
The main pull here is the Interactive Heritage Zone, a room of large stainless steel models showing flood control, waterwheels and sluices in action. It's hands-on rather than look-but-don't-touch, which is what gets a six-year-old actually engaged rather than dragging their feet. There's also a "Call of the Wild Wall" for river wildlife sounds and a Bioscope video screen, so you've got a good twenty minutes of pressing buttons before anyone asks to leave.
It's free to get in and open daily 10am to 4pm, which makes it an easy add-on to a walk along the river rather than a destination in itself. The community café is volunteer-run and does teas, coffees and baked goods, nothing fancy but enough to sit down with a hot drink while the kids finish exploring. Dogs are welcome too.
Birthday parties are the bigger commitment: outdoor, environmental-themed sessions for 4 to 11 year olds, two hours long, £12 a child with a minimum of 10 kids or £120. Themes include bug hunting and river dipping, which sounds brilliant until you clock that it happens rain or shine and wellies and warm waterproofs are required kit, not a suggestion. Only two adults are meant to stay with the group, so if you're used to the whole extended family turning up to a soft play party, this one's a rethink.
Worth knowing before you commit to a party slot: the Water World theme depends on river levels and might get swapped for Seasonal Safari at short notice, and there's a walkway closure between Currie and Balerno at the moment that pushes you onto Lanark Road if you're planning a longer river walk either side of your visit.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost to visit?
Entry to the Visitor Centre is free. Birthday parties are £12 per child with a £120 minimum for 10 kids.
Do we need to book?
There's no booking link listed for general visits, just turn up between 10am and 4pm daily.
What age is it suited to?
The exhibits work best for roughly 4 to 11 year olds, and the birthday parties are set for that age range too.
What's on offer for food?
A volunteer-run community café does teas, coffees and freshly baked snacks. It's not a big menu, just enough for a break.
How long do people stay?
It's more a stop on a river walk than an all-day trip, maybe half an hour to an hour for the exhibits.
What happens with birthday parties if it rains?
Parties are mostly outdoors, sometimes in the woods, so wellies and warm waterproofs are needed. Bad weather can force a move indoors to a classroom instead.
Can we bring the dog?
Yes, dogs are welcome at the Visitor Centre.
How do we get there without a car?
Buses 34 and 44 stop right outside, and it's about 4 miles west of the city centre on the A70.
