WHERE

Lichfield

What it’s like

Free Roman ruins and a small museum on the edge of Lichfield, with a bathhouse footprint you can walk right up to.

This is the leftover bones of a Roman bathhouse and mansio, the sort of stopping post travellers used on Roman roads. There's no charge to get in, which makes it an easy add-on to a day rather than the main event, and free parking sits just 50 metres from the entrance so you're not trekking miles with a pushchair.

The site itself has no wheelchair access, and there's a step up into the museum building, so it's worth knowing that before you plan the visit around a wheelchair or a buggy that doesn't fold easily. The museum opens on various dates from April 2026, and there are a couple of extra dates worth knowing about: Heritage Open Days in September need booking, but a date in October at 11.30am doesn't.

There's no café on site, so food means driving to Wroxeter Roman City visitor centre, which does refreshments and is apparently a decent spot for a picnic, or further out to the tearoom at Boscobel House. Neither is exactly next door, so if you've got a toddler who runs on snacks rather than patience, pack something for the car.

Given it's free and there's no booking link for general visits, this reads like the kind of stop you fit around something else in Lichfield rather than build a whole day round. The ruins themselves won't take long to walk, so pair it with lunch elsewhere and you've got a decent half day.
