What it’s like
A 950-year-old house, a walled Georgian garden and a nature trail to hunt through on a kids' trail, with your ticket covering the whole day.
This is one for wandering rather than racing about. There's a children's trail running through the year to give younger visitors something to chase around the house and grounds, and the house itself spans over 950 years of history, so there's a fair bit to take in if you've got an older child who actually reads the boards. The nature trail is registered as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which is a proper reason to slow down and look at what's under the hedges rather than just walking through it.
The Georgian Walled Garden is the bit to save until last, it's the kind of formal, structured space that looks nothing like the wilder nature trail, and going from one to the other in an afternoon is a decent contrast for kids who've only ever seen a garden centre. Your ticket gets you in and out all day.
It's open Wednesday to Sunday from late March to the end of October, 11am to 4pm, with last entry at 3pm, so this isn't a year-round back-pocket option and you'll want to check you're going on a day it's actually open. A family ticket for two adults and four children is £30, which softens the blow of the £9.95 adult price a bit if there's a few of you going. There's a café on site and picnics are allowed both in the hall and out in the grounds, with a picnic area in the glade if you'd rather sit outside with sandwiches than pay for lunch.
