What it’s like
A step back into a Victorian pub frozen in time, with a virtual reality tour and local history exhibits in Buckfastleigh.
This one's a former pub that got left almost exactly as it was, so what you're actually walking through is the building itself, not just cabinets of old things. There's a virtual reality tour built into the ground floor reception area, and museum exhibitions covering the local history around it. It's not a big flashy attraction, and that's rather the point.
Adults are £6 and kids under 16 get in free as long as they're with you, which makes it an easy one to justify for an hour of poking about. It's open Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10am to 3:30pm, with last entry at 3pm, so don't leave it too late in the afternoon. There's no booking link, so you just turn up.
Worth knowing before you go: the doorways and stairs are narrow and old, so wheelchair access only really covers the reception area where the virtual tour is. Dogs aren't allowed in either. If you're coming by train, the South Devon Railway station is about a ten minute walk away, and there are several car parks nearby if you're driving.
Group bookings work a bit differently: for 10 to 15 people or more, you can arrange a guided tour outside normal opening hours for £5.50 a head. Guided tours for individuals are also being offered on Wednesdays and Fridays, which is a nice touch if you fancy more than a wander round on your own.
