What it’s like
A small town museum where kids can be locked in the stocks, hunt through drawers and peer down microscopes.
There's a proper hands-on streak here. Kids get put in the stocks (photo opportunity, obviously), open drawers under the displays to see what's hidden below, and work through questionnaires that give them a reason to actually look at the exhibits rather than trail past them. Microscopes are set up too, so it's not just glass cases and labels.
It's open every day, 11am to 3pm, which is a tighter window than most museums give you. Adults are £5, over-66s get a bit off at £4.50, and under-16s go free, which makes it an easy one to justify if you've got children in tow.
The catch is access. There's no wheelchair route beyond the entrance lobby, so anyone using a wheelchair only sees what's on display there rather than the full museum. Parking in Dartmouth town centre is a known headache too, and the museum itself points people towards the Park and Ride rather than trying to find a space nearby.
It's a small, indoor visit rather than a half-day out, and it leans well for children who like a bit of a task, the sort who'll happily hunt for answers or rummage a drawer, rather than toddlers who need space to move.
