What it’s like

Pick a piece of pottery and paint it yourself, with sessions running about two hours.

You choose a piece from the shelves, from mugs to trinket dishes, and sit down to paint it however you like. There's no instructor standing over you telling you where the blue goes, which is either freeing or a bit daunting depending on how confident you feel with a paintbrush.

A session runs around two hours, which feels about right: long enough to actually finish something you're proud of, not so long that a fidgety painter loses the will halfway through. Prices start at £10 and climb to £50, so the cost really depends on which piece catches your eye off the shelf, a small trinket dish versus a big serving bowl makes a real difference to the final bill.

It's open Tuesday to Sunday, with longer hours on Saturday until 6 and a shorter Sunday slot finishing at 4. Mondays are shut except on bank holidays, when they open up as usual, so a bank holiday Monday is actually a good shout if the weekend's booked out.

They do birthday parties and group bookings too, painting pottery as a party activity rather than the usual bowling or trampolining. Worth bearing in mind that whatever you paint needs firing before you take it home, so this isn't a same-day souvenir.
