Liskeard

What it’s like

Free entry to a Victorian classroom, dressing-up costumes and Cornish archaeology sessions in the heart of Liskeard.

Getting in costs nothing, which makes this an easy one to slot into a rainy morning. Inside there's a Victorian classroom set up with an original desk, and kids can try on the costumes and have a go at writing the old-fashioned way. It's a small, hands-on bit of history that tends to land better with kids than a room full of glass cases.

There are archaeology sessions digging into Cornwall's history too, and craft activities that change with the season, witches hats and lanterns around Halloween, green man faces at other times. The proper workshop sessions are £5 and pitched at 5 to 10 year olds, while half-term craft activities are £2 and aimed at 7 plus, so it's worth matching the session to your child's age rather than just turning up and hoping.

Opening hours are on the tight side. Weekdays it's 10am to 4pm, but Saturday is just 10am to 1pm, and it's shut on Bank Holidays, so a lazy Saturday lie-in could easily blow your window. The museum sits on a steep hill, which is worth knowing if you've got a buggy or find hills hard going, though once inside there's a lift up to the first and second floors and plenty of room to move around.

Parking is straightforward: Westbourne Car Park is about three minutes' walk away and has disabled bays right at the entrance. If you're coming by bus, the stops on Barras Street are just around the corner, and the train station is a fifteen minute walk or a four minute bus ride if little legs are already tired.
