What it’s like

A Grade-I listed priory remodelled by Sir John Soane, with guided house tours and gardens you can wander on their own ticket.

The gardens are the easy option here, £6 for an adult and open every day from 10am, and they're extensive enough that you can lose a good couple of hours before anyone asks for lunch. The house is the bigger draw though, a Grade-I listed priory that Sir John Soane had a hand in remodelling, and you only see it on a guided tour rather than wandering about on your own.

Tours run three times a day, Tuesday to Sunday, at 10:30, 12:30 and 2:30. The standard tour is £20 for an adult and £12 under 16, and there's an extended version at £35 that gets you further into the place if you want the longer version of the story. Booking's preferred but they say it isn't essential, which is handy if you decide on the day rather than planning ahead.

Food-wise there's the Stables Café for coffee, cake and a proper lunch, and the Elephant Bar if the adults fancy a pint or a cocktail once the tour's done. It's an easy train trip too: St Germans station is a five minute walk from the house, so you could do this one without a car.

One thing to flag: the house's age and structure mean wheelchair access is limited, so if that matters to your group it's worth getting in touch with them directly to sort out assisted access before you go.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Gardens only is £6 for an adult and £4 concession. The house tour is £20 adult, £12 under 16, or £15 concession, with an extended tour at £35 adult.

Do we need to book the house tour?

Booking's preferred but not essential. Tours run at 10:30am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

What are the gardens like to visit on their own?

Open daily 10am to 5pm on a separate ticket, no house tour needed. Plenty of parkland to wander if you'd rather skip the guided bit.

Is there food on site?

The Stables Café does coffee, cake, breakfasts and lunches. There's also the Elephant Bar for draught beers, ciders and cocktails.

Can you get there by train?

Yes, Great Western Railway runs regular trains to St Germans on the Exeter to Penzance line, and the house is a five minute walk from the station.

Is the house accessible by wheelchair?

Access is limited because of the age and structure of the building. It's best to contact them in advance to arrange assisted access.

What's the difference between the standard and extended house tour?

The extended tour costs more, £35 against £20 for an adult, and takes you further into the house than the standard version.
