What it’s like

A city pub with karaoke, comedy nights, a weekly quiz and live gigs, plus American soul food most evenings.

This is a pub first, and it doesn't pretend to be a kids' venue, but if your evenings out involve older kids who'll sit through a quiz or fancy having a go at karaoke, it's got the lot. There's a weekly pub quiz, karaoke nights, stand-up comedy and live music gigs on the bill, so what you get depends entirely on which night you turn up.

Food is American soul food, walk-ins only, no booking a table in advance. It runs Wednesday to Friday from 4pm to 10pm and Saturday from midday to 10pm, so if you're planning round a meal, get there before that 10pm cutoff.

Hours shift a lot through the week. Monday to Wednesday it's 4pm to 11pm, Thursday opens an hour earlier at 3pm, and Friday and Saturday run late, with Saturday opening at midday and both nights going through to 2am. It's shut all day Sunday, which is worth remembering if that's your usual day for an outing.

It sits about five minutes from Birmingham New Street, so if you're coming in by train it's about as easy as city centre venues get. There's indoor seating and toilets on site, and given the karaoke and comedy nights, this reads more as a one for older kids and teenagers than a toddler stop.
