What it’s like
A proper concert hall in Liverpool for live music and spoken word, from classical to electronica, with tickets from £15.
This is a live performance venue rather than a hands-on exhibition, so it suits a seven or eight-year-old who can sit through a set more than a toddler who needs to move. The programme covers classical, jazz, electronica and spoken word, and standard tickets are £25, dropping to £15 for students, under 25s or anyone on JSA or Universal Credit. There's also a student membership scheme through the University of Liverpool with tickets as low as £3 or £5 for most events, which is worth knowing if you've got a teenager in tow.
Doors to the auditorium open 30 minutes before the show, and they're clear that you should arrive in good time rather than dashing in at the last minute. The box office itself keeps short hours, 11am to 2.30pm on Wednesdays and 11am to 1pm Thursdays and Fridays, though it also opens 90 minutes before performances if you need to sort tickets on the day.
The Fröhlich Café Bar does drinks and light refreshments before the show and in the interval, but it's cashless, so bring a card. No food or hot drinks are allowed into the auditorium itself, which is a bit of a faff if you've got a hungry child and were hoping to sneak something in. Tickets are non-refundable unless the event's cancelled or rescheduled, though you can pay £1.95 extra per ticket for refund protection if you'd rather not risk it.
Parking is a genuine consideration here. There's no car park on site, but ticket-holders get a reduced £6 rate for up to five hours at the Paddington Village Multi-Storey on Grove St, about a five-minute walk away. It's also a walkable option if you're coming by train, at 14 minutes from Liverpool Central and 15 from Lime Street.
