St Luke’s Bombed Out Church
WHERE
Liverpool
What it’s like
A roofless, bombed-out church turned open-air garden and café, with a calendar that shifts around events and weddings.
This is a ruin with the roof gone and the sky as the ceiling, which is the whole point of taking kids here. It's not a hands-on attraction with rides or activities laid out for children, it's a strange, atmospheric space to wander round, and what you get out of it depends a bit on whether your kids are the sort who like poking about somewhere different rather than being entertained on cue.
The Garden Bar & Café runs through the summer season, with drinks ordered by scanning a QR code at your table, so it's worth having a phone with a bit of charge on it. Toilets on site are currently portaloos, since it's still a church ruin at heart, with permanent facilities planned for later.
Opening hours shift with the seasons, 11am to 5pm from April to September and 10am to 4pm the rest of the year, but the site is upfront that this can change at short notice around weddings, events and bad weather. That's a genuine faff if you've driven over specially. Dogs are welcome on open days, which is a nice touch if a family walk is part of the plan.
Wheelchair access ramps are up during open days and events, and carers get in free with proof of accessibility needs, though wheelchair users are asked to get in touch beforehand so the ramps are ready.
