What it’s like
A proper public pool in Tadcaster with baby lessons from three months, toddler sessions and birthday parties on Saturdays.
This is a working community pool rather than a splash park with slides and sprayers, and the whole programme is built around it. Babies can start lessons from three months old under the Nemos scheme, then move up through Aquatots at three to four and the numbered Stages from four upwards. There are parent and toddler sessions too, so you don't need a child who's already lesson-ready to turn up.
Under 5s get in for £1.50, which is about as low as pool pricing gets, and a junior ticket is £4.50. The catch is the accompaniment rule: one adult can only bring two under-8s, and under-8s need an adult with them at all times even if they can already swim a length. Over-8s who can confidently manage 25 metres can come unaccompanied, which is worth knowing if you've got a nine-year-old keen to go with friends rather than a parent.
Opening hours are generous, from 7am on weekdays right up to 10pm, so early swims and evening sessions both work. There's a double-width lane kept free for lane swimmers during every public session, and dedicated Adult Lane Swimming on Monday and Thursday evenings from 8pm if you want the water to yourself.
Birthday parties run every Saturday afternoon, with three tiers depending on how much fuss you want. The £125 option gets you 45 minutes in the pool and 45 in the social area for up to 36 swimmers, £200 adds inflatables and music for up to 50, and £250 goes big with inflatables, bubbles and toys for up to 80.
