What it’s like

Sit down at the wheel or pick up a brush and turn out your own ghost incense holder or pumpkin tealight, appointment only.

This is a studio for making rather than just looking, hand-building, wheel throwing, sculpting and painting your own pottery, with themed pieces like ghost incense holders and pumpkin tealight holders on the list alongside illustrated cauldrons. If you fancy having a go at the wheel yourself, there's a session for two at £40, which is a nice one to split with someone rather than do solo.

It's appointment-only, so you can't just wander in on a Saturday afternoon and hope for a spot. That's a bit of a faff if you're the spontaneous type, but it does mean the studio isn't rammed when you get there. Booking ahead is the only way in, and there's no walk-in option from what they list.

Prices sit from £38 for the smaller painted pieces up to £40 for the wheel throwing and the themed sculpting projects, so this isn't a cheap rainy afternoon filler, more an activity you plan for. Opening hours run 10am to 8pm Tuesday through Saturday, which gives you a decent window for an evening session after work or school if that suits better than a weekend.

There's free parking on site, which takes the sting out of finding somewhere to leave the car in the city. Give yourself a proper chunk of time for a wheel throwing session especially, since getting clay to behave takes longer than you'd think.
