What it’s like

Adults-only salsa and bachata classes in Cardiff, no partner needed and beginners welcome from your first night.

This is an 18-plus (over-14s, technically, but you're looking at an evening class crowd) run of salsa and bachata sessions rather than a family day out, so leave the kids at home for this one. You turn up solo or with someone, the class rotates partners so you meet everyone in the room, and you work from complete beginner steps up to advanced depending on which evening you pick.

The classes run Monday to Thursday evenings, starting around 19:30 and running late, with Tuesday stretching all the way to midnight once the social dancing kicks in after the teaching bit finishes. That social dance time is the part to stick around for, it's where the steps you've just learned actually turn into dancing rather than counting under your breath.

Booking on the day costs £12, but book ahead and it drops to £10, or grab the flexi pass for £8.50 an evening if you're planning to come back over the next eight weeks. It's card only, so don't turn up with a pocket full of change expecting to pay your way in. There's no dress code beyond wearing something you can move in and shoes with a smooth sole, which matters more than people think once the turns speed up.

Do I need to bring a partner?

No, most people come alone. The classes rotate partners so you dance with everyone in the room.

How much does it cost?

£10 if you book in advance, £12 on the day. The flexi pass works out at £8.50 an evening and covers six sessions over eight weeks.

Do I have to book?

Booking online in advance is required, and it saves you money too. You can book any time right up until the class starts.

I've never danced before, will I keep up?

Everyone in the room started as a beginner once. The classes break things down into simple steps and you'll be moving to the music on your first night.

What should I wear?

There's no dress code, just wear something you can move freely in. Shoes with a smooth sole make the turns much easier.

What's the difference between salsa and bachata?

Salsa is quick, sharp and full of turns. Bachata is slower and more of a romantic, close dance.

Can I pay with cash?

It's card only across the board.
