What it’s like
Paddleboarding, kayaking and proper open water swimming for kids aged 8 and up, on a lake with free parking round the back.
This isn't splash-pad stuff. It's stand up paddleboarding, kayak hire and open water swimming for kids who can actually swim and are old enough to handle it, the site sets the bar at 8 years old for most of it. Ages 8 to 11 have to be on the water with an adult, one adult to two kids, and 12 to 16 year olds need a competent adult swimming with them too, one to one, unless you can produce a signed letter from a swimming coach saying the child's trained for open water. So this is one to plan round rather than turn up on a whim with the whole gang.
Open water swimming is £6.50 a go, or £27 if you want the proper introduction session, which feels the sensible way in if nobody's done it before. There's 1-2-1 coaching too at £30 if you want someone alongside just your kid. Sessions run to a fixed length and the site's clear they don't get extended, so factor in getting changed and out the door rather than lingering.
Everyone needs closed-toe shoes that can get wet, old trainers do the job, and they suggest turning up 20 minutes early if you've hired a wetsuit or need to change. There are changing rooms with showers and a couple of individual accessible toilet and changing spaces alongside the standard male and female ones. One faff worth knowing: it's a cashless centre except lockers, which want an actual £1 coin, so keep one in the car.
Parking's free in the car park round the back, and there's overflow next door if it's busy. Birthday parties are on offer for the 8-plus crowd, with a room you can hire for cutting the cake afterwards. Bank holidays it's shut unless they say otherwise, and if a storm rolls in they'll pull the session and refund you rather than risk it on the water.
