Blackleach Country Park
WHERE
Manchester
What it’s like
A free country park with open paths and a lake to walk round, open to pedestrians round the clock.
There's no gate to pay at here. Blackleach is the sort of spot you turn up to with wellies and a scooter and just let the kids loose on the paths round the lake. Pedestrian access is 24 hours, so an early dog walk or a post-tea wander both work.
The car park is the one thing to watch. It closes at dusk, so if you've timed your visit for a summer evening, don't be the family still there when the gates shut and the car's locked in for the night. Turn up with time to spare and you're fine.
There's no booking involved and nothing to arrange in advance, which makes it an easy one to decide on the morning if the weather looks half decent. Toilets are on site, which helps if you've got a toddler who's just discovered the word "no" to nappies.
It won't fill a whole day the way a big adventure park might, but for a couple of hours of fresh air and space to run, it does the job without costing you anything.
