What it’s like

A showroom stacked with tanks of fish, invertebrates, live rock and coral you can wander round for free, open six days a week.

This isn't a big-ticket aquarium with turnstiles and a gift shop at the end. It's a showroom, the kind of setup where the stock is the display: tank after tank of fish, invertebrates, live rock and coral, all set up to look good rather than to shuffle you through on a timed route. If your kids like pressing their nose to the glass and spotting the odd-looking crab in the corner, this scratches that itch without needing a whole afternoon set aside.

There's no age range given and no mention of activities laid on for children, so treat it as a browse rather than a day out with a schedule. That said, a tank of live coral and a few dozen fish species is still a solid twenty minutes of pointing and naming for most kids, and it's the sort of thing you can fold into a wider trip round Barry without much planning.

It's open Monday to Saturday, 10.30am to 5pm, and closed on Sundays, so a Sunday detour will catch you out. There's no booking system, you just turn up in business hours. Worth knowing if you're a regular: they run a reward points scheme, a point for every pound spent, though it doesn't apply to money you're using from points already banked.
