What it’s like

An adults-only float centre in Cardiff where you lie in warm saltwater and let your brain switch off for an hour or so.

This one's for the adults. You have to be 18 or over to use the tanks here, and they may ask for ID on arrival, so leave the kids with someone else for this trip.

The whole point is doing nothing. You climb into a tank of body-temperature saltwater, dense enough that you float without trying, and the door stays unlocked the entire time so you can get out whenever you like if the idea of a closed lid doesn't sit right. Sessions run 60 or 90 minutes, and they suggest building in another half hour either side for getting settled and coming back down to earth afterwards, which feels sensible rather than salesy.

Music plays for the first few minutes then fades to nothing, so most of the float happens in proper silence and dark. Earplugs are provided as standard foam ones, with a silicone upgrade if you want them, and you can rent a towel or bring your own. The water itself gets filtered between every session through an ultra-fine filter, which is the kind of detail you only really care about once you've thought about who was floating in it before you.

Turn up ten to fifteen minutes early rather than cutting it fine, since a rushed arrival is the opposite of what you're there for. It's open most days, with later finishes on Wednesdays and Fridays if you fancy an evening float after work rather than squeezing one into a weekend.

Need to know

Best for
Adults only, 18 plus; no children admitted
  • Get there 10 to 15 minutes early rather than rushing straight into the tank
  • Wednesdays and Fridays run until 9pm if you want an evening slot
  • Music plays for the first few minutes then cuts to silence for the rest of the float
  • First-timers occasionally get mild nausea or dizziness afterwards as stress leaves the body

Plan your visit

Is there an age limit?

You've got to be 18 or over, and they might ask for ID when you arrive.

How long is a session?

60 or 90 minutes, with longer available if you ask. Add on half an hour either side for settling in and coming round afterwards.

What should I bring?

Nothing essential, they've got towels to rent and earplugs provided. A swimsuit if you'd rather not float without one.

Can I still float if I'm claustrophobic?

The tank door isn't locked and opens with a gentle push, so you can float with it open or call a staff member if you need to. That control seems to be the whole idea.

Is there any risk of drowning?

The salt makes you float so naturally that drowning isn't really a concern. Your body just sits on top of the water.

Should I eat or drink beforehand?

Skip a big meal for an hour or two before, since a gurgling stomach isn't relaxing. Water's best; caffeine and alcohol are out.
