What it’s like

Hand-build a mug or have a go on the pottery wheel, a grown-up craft session for over-14s with pieces ready to collect a fortnight later.

This one's for over-14s only, so leave the little ones with someone else and treat this as a proper hands-on session for teenagers and adults. You can make a mug using the slab technique and decorate it with mark-making tools and underglaze colours, or go straight for the pottery wheel if you fancy something trickier. The Intro to the Pottery Wheel session runs three hours and gives you a proper go at throwing simple forms, which is the bit you'll want to save for when you've got a bit more patience in you.

Prices start at £45 for the two-hour mug-making session, rising to £65 for the wheel introduction and £80 for a private wheel lesson. If you're keen to keep going there's a six-week Introduction to Pottery course at £280, which works out better value if you're after more than a one-off afternoon. One thing to know: sessions need at least three people booked in to go ahead, so a solo booking might get shifted to another date or refunded.

It's not an instant-gratification craft. Whatever you make gets glazed and fired before it's ready, and that takes two weeks, so you'll be back to collect it rather than walking out with it under your arm. You'll want reasonable hand dexterity and a decent grip for the wheel work especially.

Getting there is easy enough, with plenty of local parking and a ten-minute walk from Wavertree Tech Park train station if you're coming by train. Bus links into the city are good too.

How much does it cost?

Mug-making is £45 for two hours. The pottery wheel intro is £65 for three hours, and a private wheel lesson is £80. The six-week course comes in at £280.

Is this suitable for children?

No, the minimum age is 14, so this is really a teen and adult activity rather than a family one.

How long does a session take?

The standard session runs two hours, though the pottery wheel introduction is a three-hour booking.

When do we get to keep what we made?

Not on the day. Pieces need glazing and firing, which takes about two weeks, so you'll collect them later.

What if there's not enough people booked?

Sessions need a minimum of three participants to run. If that's not met, they'll offer an alternative date or a refund.

Is it easy to get to?

There's plenty of parking locally, and it's about a ten-minute walk from Wavertree Tech Park train station, with decent bus links into the city too.
