What it’s like

Hands-on pottery painting and hand-building sessions in a small studio, with kids and teens workshops for ages 8 and up.

This is a proper hands-on studio, not a paint-by-numbers café. Pottery painting with underglazes is open to any age, so it works if you've got a younger one who just wants to decorate a mug. The kids and teens hand-building workshops are set at 8 and up, and anyone under 18 needs an adult with them. Full pottery workshops are aimed at 14 and over, and wheel throwing is 12 and up only, because the wheels and stools are built for adult height and it takes real strength to control the spin.

Pottery painting starts at £8, which is a low-stakes way to try it before committing to more. The proper workshops are £35, and if someone gets the bug there are weekly courses at £280, though those are strictly non-refundable so don't book one on a whim. Whatever you make doesn't come home the same day either. Firing takes 4 to 6 weeks, so a birthday piece needs planning well ahead of the actual birthday.

Kids parties run from age 8, with a standard 1.5 hour slot at £30 a child or a hosted 2.5 hour version at £50 that includes cake, though you're looking at a minimum of 10 children or a £300 charge either way. Groups also do corporate team-building here, priced by headcount from £90 to £120 a head depending on group size, which tells you this studio splits its week between kids' parties and adult team days.

There's no food allowed in the studio because of the clay dust, so eat before you arrive and just bring a water bottle (tea and coffee are on offer too). Non-participating guests can't sit and watch, so if you're not doing pottery yourself, best to go off and do something else nearby and come back. The studio itself is wheelchair accessible, but the toilet isn't, it's up a small flight of steps, worth knowing if that matters to your group. There's no parking on site, but Liverpool Central is a 7 to 10 minute walk and Lime Street about 10 to 15, and there are paid car parks nearby from around £1.50.

Plan your visit

How old do kids need to be?

Pottery painting is open to any age. The kids and teens hand-building workshops start at 8, and anyone under 18 needs an adult with them.

Can younger children do wheel throwing?

No, that's 12 and up only. The wheels and stools are sized for adults and it takes real strength to keep control while it's spinning.

What does it cost?

Pottery painting is £8, a proper workshop is £35, and a weekly course is £280. Just be aware the weekly courses are non-refundable once booked.

How much are birthday parties?

£30 a child for a 1.5 hour standard party, or £50 a child for the 2.5 hour hosted version with cake. Either way there's a minimum of 10 children or a flat £300 charge.

When do we get to take our pottery home?

Not on the day. Firing takes 4 to 6 weeks, so if it's a gift or a party piece, get the booking in well before you need it.

Can we eat while we're there?

Food in the studio, that's a clay dust rule, so eat beforehand. There's water, tea and coffee on hand while you work.

Is there parking?

Not on site. Street parking nearby runs £1.50 to £5, or a multi-storey is about £6 for the day. Both train stations are a short walk if you're coming that way instead.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

The studio itself is, but the toilet isn't, it's up a short flight of steps. Flag any access needs when you book so they can sort the space out for you.

Can someone come along and just watch?

They can't just sit in, the studio's too small for spectators. If someone wants to stay, they'll need to book and pay for their own spot.

Do you do corporate or group sessions?

Team-building sessions are priced by group size, from £90 a head for larger groups up to £120 a head for smaller ones. Handy if you're after something different from the usual pub quiz.
