What it’s like

Top rope walls up to 13m, bouldering, and a UV lights-off room for climbing in the dark.

The big draw here is height. Top rope routes go up to 13 metres on walls shaped into bridges, arches and stalactites, so it's not just a flat surface with holds stuck on. There's also bouldering on 3.5m walls with crash mats if you'd rather stay closer to the ground, and over 300 routes across the centre means nobody's doing the same climb twice in an afternoon.

The one to save for last is the UV room upstairs, lights off, everything glowing. It's the bit that'll get talked about on the way home more than the height ever will.

Cost adds up fast if you're not careful. Entry itself is £8.50 to £12.50 depending on age and whether you want bouldering only or the full site, and then there's a registration fee on top, £3 for the day or £5 if you want it to cover a year of visits. Kit hire is separate too, boots and harness at £3.50 each, belay device £2.50, helmet's free at least. The family deal at £32 for two adults and two kids (or one adult and three kids) is the one that actually makes sense if there's more than one child climbing.

Parking's straightforward outside weekday daytimes, when it's free on-street. During the week you're looking at pay and display, which is cheap but still a faff if you've not got change. The café does vegetarian food and drinks, nothing that's going to replace dinner but enough to refuel after an hour on the wall. It's open late on weekdays, 10am to 10pm, which is handy if you want to dodge the school-run crowd and go after tea.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Adult entry is £12.50 for all areas or £8.50 for bouldering only. Under 16s pay £10.50 for all areas or £8.50 bouldering only, and there's a family deal at £32 for two adults and two kids.

Is there an extra fee on top of entry?

Yes, a registration fee, £3 for the day or £5 if you want it to last the year. It's a bit of a sting the first time you go.

Do we need to book?

There's no booking link listed, so it looks like you can turn up and pay on the day.

What does kit hire cost?

Boots and harness are £3.50 each, a belay device is £2.50, and the helmet's free.

What's the UV climbing room?

An upstairs area with the lights off and everything glowing under UV. It's a proper change of pace from the standard walls.

How high are the walls?

Top rope routes go up to 13 metres. Bouldering walls are lower at 3.5 metres with crash mats underneath.

What are the opening hours?

10am to 10pm on weekdays, 10am to 6pm on weekends and bank holidays. Christmas Eve is a shorter day, 10am to 4pm.

Is it open on Christmas Day?

It's shut on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Is there food on site?

A vegetarian café doing drinks and snacks, so it's fine for a refuel but not a full meal stop.

Can you do birthday parties there?

From £15 a head for an hour up to £30 a head for two hours, with party rooms on site.

Is there parking?

Free on-street parking evenings and weekends. Weekday daytimes you'll want the pay and display car parks nearby.

Can you just do bouldering without the harness and ropes?

There's a bouldering-only entry option, £8.50 for adults and under 16s, which skips the harness faff entirely.
