What it’s like

Roped climbing up to 44ft, bouldering, and a bit of caving under one roof, from age four upwards.

The tall walls are the headline here, up to 44ft with ropes, but you don't need any experience to walk in and try the bouldering instead. That's the low-level stuff, crash mats rather than harnesses, topping out at just under 4 metres, and it's set up for complete beginners as well as kids who already know what they're doing. There's caving too if you fancy adding a second activity to the day, and training aids like a Mooboard and campus rungs for anyone properly hooked.

Four is the minimum age, no exceptions, and each adult can only bring two children, which matters if you were planning a big group outing with one supervising grown-up. Bouldering is walk-up, no booking needed, but the tall ropes need booking ahead and weekends fill up fast enough that they say to book well in advance. Worth knowing they rarely have an instructor free on the day without pre-booking, so spontaneity has its limits here.

Storage is the one to plan around: lockers are limited and some are on the small side, so a big rucksack might not fit. The changing room gets basic and cold reviews too, which isn't the end of the world but pack an extra layer. The café does hot and cold food at modest prices, though it's fairly plain, burger-and-chips territory rather than anything fancy, and there's no proper vegan option if that's a factor for your table. Parking's free out front and on the street, which takes one cost off the day at least.

Open 363 days a year, including bank holidays 10am to 10pm, so it's a genuine option for the awkward days when everything else is shut. Weekday evenings run late too, useful if you want to squeeze a climb in after school without rushing.

Plan your visit

How old do kids need to be?

Four is the minimum for anything in the centre, no exceptions. Each supervising adult can bring a maximum of two children.

Do we need to book?

Bouldering is walk-up, just turn up. Roped climbing on the tall walls needs booking ahead, and weekends get busy enough that they suggest booking well in advance.

What's the difference between bouldering and roped climbing?

Bouldering is low-level climbing onto crash mats, no ropes or harnesses, up to about 4 metres. The roped walls go up to 44ft and need booking.

Can my under-18 come without me climbing?

Anyone under 18 needs signed parental consent and must be supervised by a parent or guardian, unless they've had a boulder or belay assessment from an instructor. Those assessments cost extra and need booking.

What's there to eat?

There's an onsite café doing hot and cold food and drinks at modest prices. It's fairly basic, think burgers and chips, and there isn't a vegan option.

Is parking easy?

There's free parking to the front and side of the building, plus free street parking on Trafalgar Road. Spaces are limited though.

Do I need my own climbing shoes?

Shoes are optional but recommended and available to hire. Normal sensible shoes are fine too, just no heels or ballerina slippers, and climbing barefoot or in socks isn't allowed.

What are the opening hours?

Weekdays it's 10am to 10pm, weekends 10am to 6pm, and bank holidays run the full 10am to 10pm too. It's open 363 days of the year, shutting only for Christmas Eve afternoon, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Can we do a birthday party here?

Yes, parties run for an hour with one activity or an hour and a half with two, including caving as an add-on. They come with a dedicated party room and you can either use their catering or bring your own food.

Do you take card payments?

Card only works fine but there's a minimum spend of £2 on any transaction.
