What it’s like

Trek through a giant indoor rainforest, splash about in the water play, then let the kids loose on the outdoor Nature's Playground.

The big draw here is walking through one of the world's largest indoor rainforests, all steamy air and dense green canopy, with the Mediterranean Biome next door for a drier, cooler contrast. Kids who like a bit of drama will remember the rainforest most, but it's the water play and hands-on discovery bits that tend to hold their attention longest, especially with younger ones who want to touch everything rather than just look.

Outside, Nature's Playground gives you the sensory and imaginative play that a biome full of plants can't, which is worth saving for when little legs need a change of pace rather than doing first thing. There are free daily tours of the Biomes if you want someone else to do the explaining, and a scatter of contemporary artworks dotted about for anyone who fancies a slower wander.

Tickets are timed entry and you'll need to book online in advance, arriving within thirty minutes of your slot. Once you're in you can stay for the rest of the day, so there's no rush to see everything at once. It stings a bit that booking on the day costs more than booking ahead, £15 instead of £12.50 for a child and £39.50 instead of £35.50 for an adult.

Opening hours shift a lot through the year, with some winter dates running as late as 8.30pm and others closing by 4pm, and the site closes completely on a handful of dates over Christmas and January. There are cafés dotted through the site with food that ties into what's on display, which is a nice touch if you've got a curious seven-year-old asking why the pasta looks like it belongs in a jungle.
