What it’s like

Free Bookbug singing sessions for babies, Lego Fun for the school-age crowd, and no fee to just browse the shelves.

This is a proper local library rather than a big flagship one, and the sessions are the reason to time your visit around them. Bookbug is aimed at babies and under-fives, all songs and rhymes and board books, and it's free. For the slightly older ones there's Lego Fun, pitched at 5 to 11 year olds, which is a decent way to fill an after-school hour without spending anything.

Outside of sessions it's just a library, which is no bad thing. Thousands of books to work through, wifi if you need to get something done while they browse, and nobody's going to chase you out after twenty minutes. There's a baby change and an accessible toilet too, so a buggy-and-nappy trip isn't a problem.

Hours are decent for a weekday, open till 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, though it shuts at 5pm the rest of the week and doesn't open at all on Sundays. There's no on-site parking, which is worth knowing if you're not walking or getting the bus. Entry's free across the board, so the only cost is whatever you end up borrowing and forgetting to return on time.
