What it’s like
A free reference library where kids can try zine-making workshops, poetry readings and a DIY animation club.
This isn't a browse-and-borrow library, it's a reference collection you sit in and read, plus a Making Room stocked with arts materials and design software that anyone can use free of charge. There are zine-making workshops, a DIY Animation Club, and parent and baby poetry readings, so it covers a decent stretch from babies through to kids old enough to sit down and design their own pages.
Entry itself is free, and anything programmed runs on a pay-what-you-can basis, £0 to £12. That's a good system if money's tight some months and better other months. There's no booking link listed.
The catch is the opening hours: Fridays and Saturdays, 12pm to 6pm, and that's it. If you work weekdays and your kids are in school, your window to get here is genuinely just those two afternoons a week. Worth noting too that the first Saturday of each month is a masked day, mask on before you go through the door.
It's wheelchair accessible, which is useful given the narrow opening hours mean you can't always pick a quieter day to visit instead.
