What it’s like

Free library sessions for under-fives, an after-school Lego club and a proper café, all in one small York building.

Storytime and Rhymetime are the regular fixture here for the under-fives, plus an After School Lego Club and a craft group if your kids like getting their hands into something. Beyond that it's a working library, so there are books to borrow and a quiet corner to sit in while you decide what you fancy.

It's free to get in, which makes it an easy one to slot into a morning without committing to much. The opening hours are worth noting though, because they're not the same every day: Wednesday is closed altogether, Monday's a short morning session, and Thursday and Friday only open in the afternoon. Saturday is a brief 10am to 12pm window, so if that's your only free day, get there early.

The café runs shorter hours than the library itself, serving hot and cold drinks, handmade sandwiches and cakes on weekdays until 3pm and Saturdays until half past one. There's a public car park to the rear with disabled spaces right by the building, and a few bus routes stop close by if you're coming without a car.

It won't take you long to see everything, so this is more of a stop-off than a day out. Storytime for a toddler, a Lego session for an older one after school, and a cake at the café covers most of what's on offer.
