What it’s like

Pick a blank ceramic animal, dinosaur or mug and paint it yourself before it goes off to be glazed and fired.

You choose a piece of plain bisque pottery, a mug, a dinosaur, a unicorn, an owl, whatever's on the shelf that day, and sit down with underglaze paints to make it yours. The site lists a proper variety of shapes, so this isn't a one-design-fits-all setup, and that's the bit kids remember more than the painting itself: picking which dragon or plate gets to be theirs.

Sessions run 1.5 hours, which feels about right before attention drifts, and staff give you a nudge when time's nearly up so you're not rushing the last brushstroke. There's a café on site and indoor seating, so you can turn it into a proper sit-down outing rather than a quick in-and-out. Your painted piece doesn't come home with you that day either, it gets glazed and kiln-fired afterwards, so factor in a second trip or a wait for it to be ready.

Toddler and home education craft sessions run alongside the general pottery painting, which suggests the younger end is well catered for even if the site doesn't spell out exact ages. Weekend opening is shorter on a Sunday, just 10am to 1pm, so that's not the day for a lazy afternoon session. Booking online is recommended, especially at weekends and school holidays, though walk-ins get squeezed in if there's space.

Birthday parties are on offer too, with all materials provided and the option to bring your own cake or have it arranged for you, which takes one job off your list if you're planning a party weekend.

Plan your visit

Do we need to book?

Booking online is recommended, particularly at weekends and school holidays. Walk-ins are welcome if there's space, but you're taking a chance.

How long does a session take?

About 1.5 hours. They'll give you a gentle nudge near the end so you're not caught rushing the final details.

When can we go on a Sunday?

Sunday hours are shorter, 10am to 1pm, compared with the rest of the week.

Do we get to take our painted piece home straight away?

No, it needs glazing and kiln-firing after you've painted it, so it isn't ready to take home on the day.

Can you do birthday parties?

There are party packages with pottery painting and all materials provided. You can bring your own cake or arrange catering through them.
